The ageing process has a noticeable impact on snoring, causing it to become more severe over time. While individuals may not be bothered by their own snoring, it can disrupt the sleep of their partners. With advancing age, quality sleep becomes increasingly valuable.

Rafael Pelayo from the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center shed light on the reasons behind snoring and its progression with age during an interview with the Huffington Post. Snoring occurs when the throat experiences restricted airflow during sleep due to an unnatural constriction of the airway, a condition the body can normally prevent when awake. Although snoring can occur at any age, it tends to become more intense as one grows older.

Pelayo explained, “As we age, weight gain becomes more prominent, often accumulating around the neck area, thereby narrowing the throat space. Additionally, muscle tone decreases, leading to an increase in snoring.”

Some other issues may be:

Structural Changes

Structural changes within the throat and nasal passages can occur with age, contributing to snoring. These changes may include an elongated uvula, enlarged tonsils, or an increase in soft tissue in the throat, all of which can obstruct the airway and lead to snoring.

Hormonal Factors

Hormonal changes that accompany ageing can affect snoring patterns. For example, post-menopausal women may experience a higher incidence of snoring due to hormonal shifts that can contribute to weight gain and changes in airway dynamics.

Muscle Tone and Elasticity

As we age, the muscles in our throat and airways tend to lose tone and elasticity. The weakening of these muscles can lead to increased relaxation and collapse of the throat tissues during sleep, causing snoring. Reduced muscle tone can also result in a narrower airway, further exacerbating the likelihood and intensity of snoring.

Fortunately, there are techniques available to help reduce snoring and its associated noise.

While over-the-counter remedies are generally ineffective in eliminating snoring, there are various strategies that can help mitigate the problem. Altering one’s sleeping position or considering minimally invasive procedures have been found to be effective in managing disruptive snoring habits.

For individuals seeking to eliminate snoring habits, Tdo has been clinically proven to be one of the most effective anti-snoring solutions
